Totally underwhelmed by Dyson

We had the Purple upright, I think it was called the Animal, as it was supposed to be great on pet fur. (We have a Corgi who sheds constantly.) We got the yellow Dyson first, decided it wasn't strong enough and exchanged it for the Animal.
In both cases I found the Dyson to be vastly overrated. On our mix of small and large oriental style area rugs on hardwood floors it was totally mediocre. It had *a lot* of trouble at the transition from carpet to floor. A couple of the carpets have fringes and it simply could not deal with those at all. It's ability to handle stairs, using the attachment, was laughable (I think we still have that attachment someplace). Plus, my wife, who plays a lot of tennis and is quite fit, found the upright heavy to use. I just found it awkward.
Dyson's look cool and do a great job of sucking up whatever's on the floor or carpet, but they are no better, and not even as good overall as the old Sears canister vac they replaced, or the one we bought when we returned the Animal. The only advantage to the Dyson is that it doesn't use a bag.
I think they may be OK in a place with lots of one type of floor, especially if you have a lot of wall-to-wall carpeting, but in a mixed place like ours they just don't cut it.
