I really don't feel that Toyota ever had the best materials - their reputation isn't built on a nice interiors but cars that work and last. I can't point at any Toyota ever and say, "Wow, that car really surpassed its contemporaries." Never happened. My '94 Accord is way better than the Camry of that era in terms of that stuff.
I think American manufacturers have really stepped up their game when it comes to the touchy feeling bits, and it shows... really, everything you could want, especially at the price point. Toyota has not kept up here. I think what is yet to be seen, however, is whether that nice looking Ram lasts as long as that Tundra, and quite frankly if I had to put my money on one, it'd still be the Toyota. Toyota trucks have a pretty impeccable track record, and the Rams, well, they don't. Beautiful leather and fancy consoles do not a long lasting truck make.
