Right you are, Bob. I also think about all the electronics in modern cars. While electronics are in general pretty reliable, the only fix for many things in the majority of cars made in the past 5-10 years will be replace a box of circuit boards. That will be expensive and may well result in many cars that have lots of life left mechanically being junked because they'll be too expensive for the 3rd or 4th owner to fix, or at best having lots of gizmos that don't work anymore.
And as alternative fuel and hybrids become more common, the amount of electronics is only going to increase. Will the current crop of cars function well at 13 and 14 years old like my two 9Ks? I have my doubts.
