WOT--how much trouble is my son in?

My son has his '93 Comm Ed at college (SUNY school). There were no parking spots left in his dorm lot that he has the permit for, so he parked at a building next door (used to be university property, recently sold to a private party). He was towed and his car ended up impounded at a private towing facility. He called me and told me he only had $40 which probably wasn't enough to get the car. He was going to have a friend drive him over. I told him to call me when he got there and I'd see if I could pay with a credit card over the phone. He called me later and told me the place was closed so he just took his car from where it was parked out back (wasn't in a fenced area). Any body know the law's about this? I'm thinking of calling the place tomorrow to pay them and hoping not to get screwed over. Also hoping to avoid the cops getting involved. Advice appreciated.
