Some quick observations:
- Despite the article, I'm not so sure GM was anxious to get rid of Saab. GM had sunk a lot of money in the company, and was perhaps close to significant gains. In addition, a lot of Saab engineering went into current GM cars -- Buick LaCrosse, Caddy SRX, Chev Malibu, Pontiac Solstice / Saturn Skye. This was a synergistic relationship.
- 9-5 is a handsome car, refreshing different from vanilla / video gamer designs from the Japanese, and the German offerings.
- What is this starter button thing? My dad's '41 Studebaker and '48 Pontiac had starter buttons. Let's be practical and just turn the damn key. I guess I'd concede if there is an electronic security benefit.
- Volume is an issue, with only Porsche and Morgan as successful limited volume producers. Chinese production might be a benefit. My dealer (Chevy-Saab) says they could do OK on the volumes they'vve had with Saab, but it is a uniquely successful dealership. Synergy with GM components and diagnostic equipment might keep a few dealers in the game. But this strikes me as a big issue. Swede and Mike Lynch, what do you say?
I hope Saab succeeds, because I really like the car, and don't see much I like in its place. I'm poised to buy a 9-5 if it ever shows up and it meets my expectations.
