One of the main reasons that GM cannot compete with the rest of the world and especially European car manufacturers is the cost of health care and pensions. GM pays more for health care and pensions for its workers than it spends on steel to make the cars. In Europe, health care and pensions are paid for almost entirely by the government, which takes a huge burden off of the car manufacturers. Even with very powerful unions, 30 hour work weeks and two months of vacation a year, the productivity of European workers is consistently higher than the productivity of American workers, due in large part to the health-care and pension costs that the European governments pay for.
