Expensive circuit boards Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 07:50:00 In Reply to: more circuit boards, Jeff Laske, Thu, 17 Dec 2009 04:56:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My brother has a 1993 BMW 3-series (325 or 328?) in very nice condition, but it has a bad ABS controller. On this system, the ABS controller sends a signal to the ECU which retards the spark (reduces power) when it thinks that it needs to control wheel spin - a different way of providing Traction Control from our lovely similar-age SAABs which use an electronic throttle body for a similar function. The system disengages once the speed is above 43 mph and allows full power, car cruises fine on the interstate. A replacement ABS controller (custom chip, rebuilds are not available from the usual sources) is a $1300 dealer part, plus you have to pay a dealer $300+ to marry it to your car - and no guarantees that this will fix the issue. His dilemma: is it worth putting $1600+ into an otherwise fine car that isn't worth too much more than that (needs some other minor repairs too)?
My guess is that the ABS controller circuit board has a microcrack in a solder joint to the connector or a bad capacitor. This is indicative of how exceptionally minor electronic bugs will total otherwise fine cars.
