I agree and don't think that's what's stopping a sale of Saab to a small sports car manufacturer like Spyker. Saab has a pair of all new vehicles ready to roll down the assembly line. They're both loaded with GM parts. I really think GM's Friday the 18th announcement to shut down Saab was simply a negotiating ploy to get Spyker (or another buyer to meet GM's terms).
Regarding preventing competition: I did however read a rumor weeks ago that GM did fear selling current Saab technology to BAIC (Beijing Auto). Though they have sold the older 9-3 and 9-5 platform technology to them. I don't think it's unreasonable that GM might fear having yet another SE Asian competitor invading our shores with cars. Imagine manufacturing the all new 9-5 (same platform as the Caddy CTS) at Chinese labor costs then importing them to the US. GM would be competing against a CTS slayer with a cost advantage over the CTS that they created with their own money. Thus, if I were GM, any contract selling Saab will be absolutely loaded with caveats.
