Parallelling of possible decision paths.......... GM wanted the SAAB decision completed by year end, it didn't happen. It appears to me GM has two groups operating on parallel paths, each group pursuing the steps necessary for one of the two eventual outcomes. One group still pursuing the sale of SAAB, the other pursuing the liquidation of SAAB.
GM hired AlixPartners for the liquidation of all "Old GM" properties in North America. Indicating AlixPartners is the preferred source to perform the same task for SAAB is not surprising. GM's announcement says that AlixPartners can't be hired unless the Swedish Gov't approves.
I suspect GM will be asking the Swedish Government contingent to approve one of two plans next week when they visit Detroit. Either the sale of SAAB to GM's preferred buyer, or the liquidation of SAAB with AlixPartners providing oversight.
I fear that GM is trying to destroy the SAAB brand prior to the sale. This will serve two purposes for GM: eliminate another global competitor; and increase the liklehood of SAAB's eventual failure which will vindicate GM's past poor management of the SAAB brand. "See, no one else could make a profit with SAAB either."
