There are a couple reasons for the monthly fee. The DVR is a full blown computer and the price is partly subsidized by the monthly fee to make it more attractive / easier to buy.
The other thing is you get program guide information and the occasional software update. The program guide is how it differs from an infinite tape VCR.
I have a lifetime service TIVO which avoided the monthly fee, but it was a serious chunk of money (like a new low end computer), and they aren't doing that much any more, as they were trying to build their customer base when they signed me up. I'd still be using it, but it doesn't work with DirecTV HD. I prefer the TIVO interface over anything I've seen yet. If TIVO makes something for your TV service, put it at the top of your list.
I have a DirecTV HD DVR currently. It does what the TIVO does, but just with a little less thoughtful interface. No other complaints though. If I couldnt have DVR, I probably wouldn't bother with television.
Some of the ways it can change your life for the better are:
* Ability to skip ads. Either press pause and buffer enough so you can FF through the ads, or watch the show after recording it. Big time saver, especially with the news if there are stories you aren't interested in.
* watching what you want, when you want. Life is getting too complicated to say, "I've got to be home at 9 when my show starts." You don't have to have the TV competing with a family meal if it's the only time something important is on.
