I have a Weathershield on one of my cars. It does a very good job of keeping the car dry. The only problems I have with it is that dew beads up on it and then you tend to get the car wet when you take it off, and you have to then lay it out somewhere to dry it out. Can't just roll it up and put it in the trunk. Rain water also will collect in the areas that elastic holds up under the bumpers (on a c900 anyway). The weathershield gets its water resistance from being a very tightly woven fabric. Nothing has been added to it for protection--doesn't need it. That makes it keep its resistance much longer than other fabrics. The fabric is thin, and won't give you much falling debris protection.

On two other cars, I have covers made from Noah fabric. It's thicker and softer, just as water resistant, and doesn't dew up. I can usually only get about three years of outdoor storage with one before it stops keeping the car completely dry though.

On one car this winter I put one of my old Noah covers that lost it's water resistance, and then I put the weathershield over that. Best of both. :-)

If you spend the money to get a proper fitting custom-fit cover, you shouldn't have to worry at all about the cover damaging the paint. It should be too snug for wind to move the fabric enough to rub. Buy an inexpensive one-size-fits-all cover and all bets are off. Covers that have integral mirror pockets will fit more snug also.
