1) Fly on SAS. They may not be the cheapest option, but they have direct flights from the US to the Scandinavian capitals. They also don't charge extra for "open jaw" itineraries, so long as both points are places they fly to. In 2001, I flew Newark to Stockholm, then returned Copenhagen to Newark.
Icelandair is a decent enough airline. Food is fantastic (Salmon & reindeer meatballs, anyone?). Seat pitch in coach is VERY close. First time ever on a 757 I had my knees hitting the seat in front. If you fly them, DO take them up on a stay in Iceland on the way TO Sweden. If you don't the whole leave in the evening, get to Iceland at midnight, change planes, then to Sweden will leave you a wreck for the following day.
2) If you've never flown to Europe: Try to get as much sleep on the plane as possible. When you arrive in Sweden (of on the continent if you're connecting to Sweden), do your usual "morning routine". Brush, shave, etc. Change clotes, even (including undies). That REALLY helps to get you on European time.
3) Gothenburg (Goteborg): A very nice town. Very walkable. Take the canal tour, and remember to duck!
4) Volvo museum: Don't miss it. Sure, it's not what you're really there for, but it's a good trip.
5) Saab Museum (of course...)
6) If you're driving across to Stockholm, the Swedish Air Force Museum in Linkoping is a good stop.
7) Stockholm. Big city, but on a small scale. Many museums, including the not-to-be-missed VASA Museum, a 17-th century warship that sank on its maiden voyage, and was raised 300 years later.
8) IKEA - you've got so see one in the homeland...
9) BILTEMA - The "Pep Boys" of Sweden, and so much more.
10) Copenhagen - Ok, so it's not Sweden, but Denmark's first city is a really nice place.
That's enough for now...
Oh - August may give you a hard time with a Factory tour. The factory shuts down for several weeks in summer, and depending on when you go, tours may not be available. They usually are closed from around Midsummer (Summer Solstice) through mid to late August.
PS: Legoland is in Denmark, not Sweden.
