1) Don't automatically assume the Collection Agency is valid. This could be 100% bogus with some schyster looking to score a quick grand from you.
2) Do treat this as serious. With the bankruptcies of GMAC, GM, sale of SAAB, sale of GMAC, etc., any and all paperwork screwups are possible.
3) Demand proof of claim - forms, statements, descriptions of charges, etc.
4) Get assistance from your Financial Planner, a Credit Counselor, a Lawyer, or some professional who is experienced in ferreting out the truth in these situations.
Chances are this will cost you no money but be a big waste of your time. Fourteen months of no correspondance from GMAC prior to this random phone call is a good sign the Bill Collector has the wrong guy. I have even gotten phone calls at work from Collectors seeking someone with my matching name and threatening me with foreclosure/eviction.
Best of Luck!
