AIS, I don't know you, but you are an inspiration to anyone who has to deal with adversity, not just illness. Make the most of your time, and do the things you want. Three particular ideas have occurred in this thread, around satisfying your automotive Nirvana, some of them have recurred. The ones I recommend, and you can have all of them for well inside your budget, are as follows:
1. Porsche 911. Pretty much any 911. I have a 1975 911S, which is more or less identical to EGD's 1977S. 1978-1983 911 SC's are a very good choice in an older 911. Pretty easy to maintain, if they have been taken care of. Mid 1990's 993 model 911's have many modern conveniences, and are still an exhilarating classic. The 2000's GT3's are an awesome modern sportscar, and you can get a great one for $50k.
2. A classic you luster after in your teens or 20's or whenever, but just felt you couldn't have it. Now, you can. E30 BMW M3? BMW 2002? Audi Ur-Quattro? Ferrari 328? Fill in the blanks...
3. Fractional ownership club. This will open doors to a wide spectrum of cars; there are probably more than one in every major metropolitan area in the US. Check them out, and what cars they offer and what terms they have. Most have a sizable initiation payment (think $50k), with a $10k annual membership, but memberships can be sold/transferred to another person. One such club in Boston is called the Otto Club. You could have access to everything from Maybachs to Range Rovers to Porsche Turbos to Lamborghinis to Lotuses. Good luck and have fun!
