I'm here in Sweden now... Been here in Sweden since last Friday the 5th and heading home on Sunday the 14th. While here we have spent some days all over Sweden including Stockholm (back here now to fly out tomorrow), Gothenburg to tour the Volvo sites, and Trollhattan for Saab sites.
I'm planning to write up a more detailed summery on my return but here is a brief answer to whats going on at Saab and Volvo.
Volvo- Fully ramped up and rolling. Toured the museum and factory which was in full swing. Took the Volvo factory tour and was able to watch XC70, XC 90s and others being produced. Really quite amazing. Over 300 robots in one assembly and welding area and only 30 workers including 5 human welders who weld certain areas which are done better by hand than machine. Very nice facilities and staff.
Saab- While hoping to get a factory tour from 6 weeks in advance, letting them know we were coming from the states to visit, the factory has been shut down waiting on suppliers to ramp up production parts for the vehicles. We got an excellent behind the scenes tour/look at the museum and all the displays. What an amazing place. Also got to see how the new TTID twin turbo setup on the new diesel works and many other non US specd items being produced. While talking with Peter Berkstrom who is the director of the museum, he said that once GM began the liquidation process of Saab, all the suppliers were notified they were canceling the vehicle run. This has had Saab's brakes on at the factory since. He said to expect the factory to be up and running in 3-4 weeks.
While there during our tour, we also got an amazing 45 minute or so ride around Trollhattan in a pre production new 9-5 v6 Aero XWD. It actually is the same vehicle which Victor (spyker) drove around while he was here visiting Saab. Quite an amazing vehicle. More to follow.
Gotta get going, last day in Stockholm...Will check posts once back in the states. The enengery here at Saab and what is going on with their eperation from GM is amazing! Everyone has an upbeat mindset and I can say, expect some great things from Saab in the next few years. They are going to run with this freedom :-)
