When that big F5 went through Moore, OK several years ago, causing significant loss of life, many of the town's residents built above-ground reinforced bunkers. Was it just a couple of years later that another F5 went through the same path, and this time there was no loss of life? I hope I got the story right. I do remember that the first tornado hit just as school had let out.
I great up in OK City, and we had a basement that flooded with big rains, until we had drainage tile and a sump pump installed.
As far as the relationship between lack of basements and tornado prevalence, it certainly makes sense. Places that see more huge storms are likely to have difficulty with basement flooding (so they don't build 'em) and tornadoes. What I wonder is whether the clay-like soil in Oklahoma is at all related to eons of huge storms and flooding. It seems that richer topsoil would be washed away. Anybody have any thoughts on that?
