With all the talk about Saab getting back to it's roots, I have to confess I'm beginning to wonder just what that is. Back in, say the 90's, the 9000 really dominated it's class in performance, but with cars making 400 and 500 horsepower these days that's not going to happen, nor would I want a car like that. While turbo four cylinders are something I like, there's a limit to what such an engine do--it's going to be a hard sell in the $50K segment--and turbos are everywhere. All weather ability used to be part of it, but with the AWD everywhere that's no longer a claim to fame, even though FWD Saabs are much better in snow than most other FWD cars. Hatch backs? Even BMW has hatchbacks (along with turbos no less)and cross-over/wagons (which essentially function as hatchbacks)are a growing segment of the market. While Saab was way ahead of the curve on most of this stuff the fact is everyone else has caught up. So what now--what can Saab do that would be different and unique? What are we looking for and expecting in terms of "Saabness?"
