I have an wireless X-10 PIR unit that turns lights on [at night only] when a car pulls up to the front walk or someone walks towards the front door. But when is is windy and there are leaves on the trees, movement of branches continually triggers the unit. I think that the moving branches are 'flickering' a street light that is 250 feet away. But lights on moving cars do not do this. So the reason is not understood. You may want an active IR system and that needs wires to power the IR source. Then you would want to elevate above cats, docs, rabbits, snow drifts and snow banks. Birds may trigger, but some units might ignore brief events such as that and falling leaves.
Perhaps one can get a wireless IR system that is solar charged to power the IR source. Or add your own solar charger to a battery powered unit. Magnetic units will not false alarm but will only detect vehicles.
