I assume you are referring to the 4 cylinder valve cover. I'll see if I can find it in the WIS this evening. It's not what you would expect, i.e., start at the center and work outwards in a spiral, like the head bolts. If I remember correctly, you start at both ends and work your way to the center.
I put sealant on mine. I used black silicone sparingly. Black so it wouldn't be so obvious, and sparingly so it doesn't squeeze out inside and end up clogging something. The cover bolt torque value is pretty low, since the o-ring does most of the work.
