While we're waiting ...

While we're waiting to see how the Saab divesture / acquisition plays out, here are a couple of ideas to occupy your thoughts:
First, take a look at the July 09 Automobile magazine article by George Kacher. Kacher is a highly experienced and competent auto consultant (I believe) and journalist based in Germany. He makes the case for volume, citing pressure at BMW and Mercedes and their potential need for partners in the current economic environment. Even BMW and Mercedes sales are modest compared to Fiat, VW, Honda, and Toyota, and even GM and Ford.
So if BMW and Mercedes are worried about production cost vs volume (e.g. profitability and return to shareholders), you can just guess what kind of analysis is going on at Saab.
And if that makes you think about the availability of the 9-5 due out shortly, maybe you should grab the August 09 Road & Track. Check out the ad on pages 14 and 15 for the 2010 Buick Lacrosse. Does the 280 hp, 3.6L V6 sound familiar (not clear if it's turbocharged -- probably not, given the displacement difference). It's also reportedly available with AWD (Haldex?), and features adaptive suspension. Did GM learn something from Saab, now incorporated into the Buick line since the divestiture decision?
GM has the capability to build an outstanding, world-class sport sedan. Do you suppose they might do it (in addition to the CVS-T)? In a Buick?
Just in case you wanted something else to ponder ...
