From what I've observed, JAJ has very good management skills + probably if any 1 person was responsible for Saab existing today, it is him. The trouble with a large organization is it has momentum. One cannot blame someone who starts in 2005 for failings in 2005 + 2006. At one point I worked in a company where a brilliant VP came in + tried to improve a production environment that was not great + succeeded in many regards, but was removed (or removed himself? I forget?) after a year or so (+ replaced by a complete dud)... the successes weren't seen for a couple years. It's a bit like politics, there is momentum!
While we didn't see "proper" new product releases from Saab in 2005-2010 (aside from the exterior 9-3 facelift which imho is more saaby than pre 2008), there was a lot of behind the scenes work going on that did not happen just in the last few months. We got:
- XWD
- a brand new 9-5
- a new platform for the 9-3 + significant engineering of the car
- electric drive r+d
etc...
stuff was happening behind the scenes that positioned Saab to move forward now. The recent announcements are associated with more than 7 months of work. JAJ can't be credited for all of that, obviously much is also the vision of those below him, but he was at the helm + they are well positioned now. For that alone (nevermind seeing them through the GM selling/killing fiasco), imho he has done a great job.
