The compact florescent bulbs illuminating most LCD displays probably also lose some brightness with age. Note that the stated lifetime of these bulbs is typically 50,000 hours - perhaps older versions dimmed and died sooner, and/or their high voltage circuits got weaker as capacitors aged.
