I travel from the Hartford area to NJ a lot to visit family, and travel to Boston often too.
I prefer the Tappan Zee to 287 to the Merrit Parkway to 91 North. Once you get to Hartford, get onto 84 East to the Mass Pike to Worchester.
I like the Merrit as there are several rest areas right along the road with rest rooms and conveinice stores (and overpriced gas.) Also, there is no truck traffic on this road. You will be going out of the NYC area, and traffic should be moving, but my disclaimer is that I have not traveled northbound on the Merrit this time of day on a weekday. The alternate others have mentioned is 684 and/or the Sawmill to 84, which won't be bad going North against traffic, but driving through Danbury and Waterbury on 84 around 8:30- 9:00 AM is no pic-nic either, and 84 is very hilly and winding through these cities too.
