Because their OS is so full of holes and has a well-deserved reputation for attracting viruses and becoming unstable/unusable. Linux (which is free) doesn't have this problem. If MSFT want to keep people buying new Windows OS, they need to address their vulnerabilities - and they apparently have. As the paradigm for personal computers shifts towards a more cloud oriented architecture, virus protection may take a different form.
