Tribute from Hedy Calabrese (David's ex-wife in Salt Lake City)

Since there will be no service for him I would like to honor him with this short tribute. When you write to your friends again about Dave, please tell them that Dave was a truly good man, scrupulously honest in all his dealings all his life, never taking advantage of any one. In spite of having sounded gruff at times, he was a loyal, generous and truly caring friend.

Foremost he was an engineer and approached any problem solving situation like the true engineer that he was. He had a keen and analytical mind. He was very good with his hands and loved working on his older Saabs. When he retired, he had more time for that and regularly went to his "golf course", as he called it, the junk yard, to see if there was a Saab that might have parts that he could harvest for use right now, or that he would store for later use, or that his friends might need. Going to the Saab conventions was a priority for Dave, and visiting with other Saabers was a joy to him.

He read the New York Times every morning at a coffee shop and later in the day other newspapers, including international ones, on line. He had coffee at one bookstore or another several times a week, which were a source of pleasure to him.

He loved America, always believed in it's underlying goodness and had served as a medic in the Special Forces. Even 50 years later he has stayed in touch with a couple of friends from that time.

After our divorce we became wonderful, caring friends, always there for each other and always in touch. He had found love again with Sandy, who loved him dearly and with whom he spoke every evening when he was not visiting her in Chicago. I was glad for Dave for the fun and love and travels that he and Sandy shared and that made his life so much better.

It is tragic that his life has been cut short in such a senseless way.

Hedy
