Don't want to start a pissing match over such an insignificant issue, but you need to bone up on your Edsel history. The Edsel didn't die because it was ugly. There is much more behind its demise than that. The 1958 sold very well for a first-introduction car. Especially since it was introduced in a similar economic downturn. It's troublesome ahead-of-its-time push-button transmission was difficult for mechanics to work on. In 59 they lost the push-button transmission, reduced the engine size to a 6 cylinder and subdued all the exclusive design of the car--that's when sales bombed. It's been speculated that group head Robert McNamera wanted to kill off the brand almost from the start. Taking away things that made it appealing to buyers insured that. The brand would have survived with committed management and if Ford had a better economic outlook at the time. They couldn't afford to ride it out to make it work. The initial investment in the car was too great.
