The labor cost and cost of robotic stations during car manufacturing is most correlated to Parts Count. Notice, it's a count, not weight. The cost increase of a bigger car of the exact same design and exact same part count, just scaled up by 5-10% in linear dimension (resulting in 15% - 50% interior volume increase) is minimal in terms of labor cost and robotics. The material cost of course scale up by the weight increase, assuming using the same material.
What that means is that, as standards of living increase in a society/economy, it makes less and less sense to make small cars . . . simply because bigger cars doesn't cost much more to make when labor cost dominates over material cost.
Small cars (and motorcycles and scooters as means of transporation) are correlated with relative poverty for a very sound economic reason. As European economy improved in the last half century, their cars became bigger and bigger. Americans peaked in the late 1960's / beginning of 70's, with an encore replay of that degree of prosperity 30 years alter.
