it is a troy built 46" mower with the kohler courage 22hp engine, just over a year old. towards the end of last season it would crank for awhile before catching. 1st time out this year, i needed starting fluid to get it going. it won't start with the choke on, and i smell fuel when cranking so i assume i'm getting too much. but it also won't start with choke off, just cranks in both situations. i have now migrated to using starting fluid with each cold start - which i know is not all that great for it over time.
last week, the engine started hunting a little. something is definitely off, not sure if governor or carb need adjusting. i've replaced the fuel filter, air filter and spark plug a couple weeks ago. i checked compression and get around 92 psi - i believe it should be up around 120 psi, but 92 should still be enough to start and run the engine. i have pulled the air box, looked in the carb and visually checked the engine externally but have not found any smoking guns. i don't want to start messing with the carb adjustment if i can help it as they are not supposed to need much tweaking from what i have heard.
any other thoughts before i start getting into it deeper or throwing money at it?
thanks.
