well, if you can't see the side of your car, you can't see something between the edge of your field of view and the car... it's a new blind spot... so, if it is just slightly off, probably not much will fit in there, but if they are aligned really wide, then you may have a blind spot tight to your car that something could get in... eg a cyclist sharing a lane with you... particularly at the back corner of your car between the inside of the side mirror field of view and the outside of the rearview...
I personally like to get a bit of the edge of my car in the mirrors, at least if I lean a little... but I always also do a shoulder check... I also continuously monitor traffic + adjust my position to keep stuff out of blind spots...
one of my biggest pet peeves are people who drive with cruise control + pass something very very slowly (because their cruise is set a hair faster than the car in front of them)... I once followed a BMW "passing" someone else for nearly 20 minutes... they drove in the other car's blind spot almost the whole time, on a highway with 2 lanes and few other cars around... this is actually very dangerous, so why do it? to avoid going 5mph faster for a few seconds? get off the cruise + drive the car! the rule I learned in driver's ed was no car should be in another's blind spot for more than 2 seconds. Any more than that is unsafe... Imho, speeding laws should be relaxed (for passing purposes) and there should be a law that if you can't pass in 2 seconds, you aren't allowed to pass... $100 fine for each second over the 2 second limit ;-)...
James...
