Others here have given good suggestions.

Here's what you should NOT do: if your video card only has composite (single round jack, usually yellow) or s-video (small round multipin connector) output, do not bother using it to connect to the TV!

The video quality of those types of outputs will look absolutely awful on a 50" TV! If those outputs are all you have, invest a few bucks in a newer card with component, HDMI, or DVI output.

Of course before you do that, see what inputs your TV has! You need a video card with outputs that match what your TV has available. If the only free inputs are composite or s-video I'd probably skip it.
