I've had a 110V Campbell-Hausfeld oilless compressor (horizontal, 20-gal tank) for quite a few years now and it still works well. I'm sure in a professional environment it would quickly turn into a pile of smoking junk, but it's fine for home garage use where it's not going to be used constantly.
I've had no problem running an impact wrench and a variety of other tools. Make sure you get one with a decent-size air tank or you'll run out of air frequently, I'd consider what I have to be the minimum usable tank size. Also make sure it can deliver the pressure and volume of air needed by the tools you expect to use.
You should probably run it on a 20-amp or better circuit if possible. I have a single 15-amp circuit in my garage and I have to turn the shop lights off to run the compressor or the breaker trips.
