I prefer my own backup Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Fri, 14 Oct 2011 04:26:17 In Reply to: Computer backup - hard drive vs. cloud?, RodM, Fri, 14 Oct 2011 03:25:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
With a so-called "cloud" service you lose control of your data. You are at the mercy of whoever is running the service to maintain and secure it, as well as to provide access to it. You don't know where your data will be kept or ultimately who will have access to it under what conditions, or even whether you really will be able to get your data back if you have a time-critical need to access it. (If nothing else, you are not assured of having a live internet connection when the time comes.)
I prefer to keep things under my own control, so maintain multiple backups, rotating one kept off-site.
(I do find the current "cloud" hype amusing, as it brings us back to the way computing was done 30-40 years ago, where you had a terminal accessing data and services on remote servers. The main differences I see are that today you get purty pictures instead of a text terminal, and back then you did not have the whole world trying to crack into your stuff.)
