I've used Audacity. What format did you save the 4-track file in? Depending on format, Audacity may not be able to recognize the 4-tracks and will likely only give you a 2-channel stereo track to work with. You can split the two channels and work with them individually though. Audacity does have the ability to add blank space and/or change tempo. Sometimes it is better to copy and paste a small sample of ambient sound from the track rather than add blank space though if the synch issue is not at the beginning of the track.
