Interesting comment on Detroit business radio tonight Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 17:33:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Story line tonight was that SWAN is negotiating a sale of Saab that will involve GM becoming a partial owner - again.
What will GM do with Saab?
Close it down? - This will incur the wrath of Sweden (and US companies have not done well in anti-trust/IP suits in Europe lately), potentially the wrath of China (which is the source of over 50% of GM's sales and their multiple minority position Joint Ventures with other state controlled companies), and be a diplomatic embarrassment for the US since the Treasury Dept still owns 30% (+/-) of GM. Not likely in my view.
Hands on management? - GM tried this for the 2000 to 2010 time period with mixed results. Plus, GM says they only want to protect their IP. Not likely in my view.
Hands off partner? - GM has done this with Isuzu, Suzuki, Lotus, Fiat, and others with varying results. GM could be involved just enough to protect their (alleged) IP, push Saab to move vehicles off GM platforms quickly, limit/prevent Saab's access to GM's future IP, then GM would sell their position in Saab when the IP issue appears to be minimum risk. This is most likely in my view.
Anyone else pick-up this story line from another source? Could all be just wild speculation too.
