The GM U-Wreck-Em has already been sold to the car rental company. GM gets no benefit from you driving it. Even if every Saab owner refused to take a GM car as a rental it wouldn't make a blip to the likes of Avis, National, etc. It just makes you feel good. The rental car company doesn't care what you rent.
When I go onto National's Emerald Aisle I tend to grab a Nissan, Hyundai, or Toyota before a GM product, but I'll take a GM car before a Chrysler product because they are nicer to drive and because Chrysler products are ugly. But still, rental cars are just appliances, you aren't making payments on the thing.
