If parts are there, it will fall within the industry formula of market value - scrap value = repair costs allowed. Say your $4,000 car needs $3000 in repairs. If the salvage/scrap/auction value is over $1,000 they will total the car without question. All dollars and cents.
Friend recently bought a "salvage" '08 9-5 Aero wagon that was lightly hit high in the LH front corner. Shop was unable to get the two parts to make repairs, a headlamp and hood. Ended up totaled after waiting three weeks searching for new or used parts. He bought it from a guy who did find a hood and headlamp, put it together and sold it. Friend got an amazing price, as he should.
