Hold on to your shorts, new A/C refrigerant Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 10:17:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A lot of us can remember the old R12 refrigerant which cost $1 per can. Then starting in the mid-1990's it was replaced with R134a due to this new compound being more friendly with the Ozone Layer. A one pound can of R134a costs around $4.
I heard this morning that R134a is being replaced by R1234YA (or something similar) which is both friendly to the Ozone Layer and has a low Greenhouse Gas contribution. Apparently its use will be mandated in Europe this year. Cost for this new refrigerant is $100 per pound!
I don't think any automotive repair shops will be stocking 30 pound cylinders of this stuff!
