I actually just rented one of these. It was interesting, but definitely a niche vehicle! I'm not sure what that niche is - a family in Tokyo? Seating for 6 in such a small package is cool, but it leaves almost zero luggage room (and those two in the back better not have much in the way of legs at all). With the back row down, your luggage space is still modest. The car is small and rides and handles quite well, in my opinion, and the engine is fairly smooth and strong. However, it does feel more like a small, sport van to me rather than a car. I think a 9000 has better rear passenger space and luggage space than the 5 (the only real disadvantage I can think of is occasional use of that third row). To me a 9-5 wagon sounds perfect for this trip - a little tight on space, but anything bigger is going to drive like a truck/van and cause a big fuel economy penalty. Renting an Odessy or Sienna would sure be nice too - tons of space and drive better than you'd expect!
