I did my house last year with my son helping on his cell phone. I gave him a drill to plug in the various outlets. I put all the info in a table in Word, printed it on card stock, enclosed it in a clear plastic sleeve and mounted it near the breaker panel. I also went a step further and labeled any junction boxes with the corresponding breaker number by writing on the cover with a sharpie. Also wrote "Feed" on the wires between the panel and the junction boxes. To do that, you need to visually trace the wires back to the panel.
My dad used to take a piece of U-shaped 12-gauge insulated wire; strip a little insulation off the ends; and stick it in an outlet to trip the breaker. Easy way to find out. That technique also lets you know if your breakers are functioning properly. If they don't trip, you need to replace them. Obviously, this isn't the safest thing to do. ;-D
