The 9-5 was rushed to market. It came to the US as a $50,000 plus car with NO sunroof available. The dashboard was not available and a much cheaper version substituted. A number of electronic features that were to be on the car simply did not exist.
But more than that it came to the market with NO availability of Manual transmission, no 4 cylinder engine ,awd only with automatic and of course no diesel, all of which were available in Europe.
Then the marketing was non existent. The loyal Saab owners and supporters felt left out of the picture as the car did not continue the strengths that had brought them to SAAB. Where was the hatch back? Fuel economy with power.
Now to be fair what got overlooked was an incredible potential safety factor that was shown in crash tests. One of the most solid bodies Saab ever produced. The handling and drive ability is superb. It is a great car, but current Saab owners were not drawn to it and non Saab owners did not even know it existed.
