When I lived in Bozeman, I put 'em on and left 'em on for a while.

This winter in California, I just put 'em on when snow is in the forecast. This winter especially has been dry and warm. There would certainly be years when I'd just leave them on for skiing and getting around, but I live in the "in between" zone where, because of the elevation, some storms are rain and some are snow. Moving up or down a thousand feet can mean the difference between feet of snow (over night) and inches of rain.

I had my snows on last week (9" of snow on the ground), took them off on Monday (Tuesday-Friday were 60-70 degrees), and might put them back on tomorrow (Rain forecast for my place, but the ski hills will probably end up with a few feet this week, and I'll be going). It takes me about 20 minutes. Not a big deal. I don't hesitate to switch depending on the coming use of the car. I try to avoid driving winter tires in warm (65+) weather for prolonged periods.

Full disclosure: I'm talking about the snow tires/wheels on my '89 BMW 325iX. At this point, and for this year, the new-to-us Saab doesn't have snows. It just stays home if the roads are better navigated by the BMW. Next year it will, and they will be put on and taken off through the season. My previous car (9000 Aero) lived in Bozeman and had studded snows on 15" steelies. I do miss the winter that comes and stays. Last year, however, the local ski hill here in CA got 750 inches of snow. We just can't count on cold, prolonged winters this far south and this close to the Pacific.
