General question about power steering problems Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Mon, 19 Mar 2012 06:17:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In all truth, this is a question about a 10-year old Acura Legend. One of my daughter's friends came by to pick her up yesterday and the PS was making a god-awful noise, so I had a look at it (friend's dad is not very mechanical).
It was doing the classic groaning you get when the system is low on fluid. I looked into the reservoir expecting to see that it was low, but instead, it was nearly at the top, but filled with foaming PS fluid. I added a bit of fluid thinking that the problem was just that it started out low. After 5 minutes there was no real change. Then I had her turn the wheel all the way from left to right and vice-versa a couple of times.
The frothing got considerably worse and actually started over-topping the reservoir. I've never seen a PS system acting like this. Could it be that the system is just low and needs to rest over night before having fluid added. Pump shot? Rack toast?
Friend says that it is not difficult to turn, just noisy. Sound is definitely coming from the pump, but I figure that if its pumping foam, it's not going to be very happy about it anyway. Before I talk to friends dad about this, I thought I solicit the thoughts of the best automotive brain trust I know.
Anybody ever have something similar happen?
