Why rotate side to side? I mostly have been running directionals + rotate front to back on the same side.
Bidirectional can be either symmetric or asymmetric.
If you have a symmetric tire + wear either the inside or outside edge, you can flip it on the rim to extend tire life (one would usually wait a longer interval than normal tire rotations though). Most directional tires are also symmetric.
Few asymmetric tires are actually directional it seems, even if the tread "looks" directional. The reason is probably complexity (ie cost!): 2 molds, and the need to manage 2 types of stock + ensure they go on the car right. I don't understand why a manufacturer would sweep a tread away from the horizontal and have that sweep go a different direction on different sides of the car!
So some conclude that it just doesn't matter... but it seems directionals do quite well in wet (and snow). So they appeal to me. I'm looking at summer tires this year for the 9-5 + was keen to try Nokian V but they just aren't available in North America (we very much liked the Nokian NRH2). I'm now looking more to symmetric tires like the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S+... Still not 100% sure what to get... I am avoiding non-directional symmetrics (ie rotationally symmetric) like most all season tires out there. I've never driven a set I like much. Imho too much compromise in favour of flexibility/general purpose vs performance...
so basically I am no help!
