ideally snows are narrow and tall, so 17" rims aren't great. I've got a spare set of 17" rims but I'm going to trade them for 16". That said, I'm sure 17" will work, and if you mainly drive on plowed roads, some of the more touring oriented winter tires may suit you (and the 17" rims) just fine. I had michelin primacy alpins last year on 16" steelies on the 9-5 and was very underwhelmed at the snow/ice performance, but ride qualities were great.
