Took the family from the LA area north up US 395 to Mono Lake and the Eastern Sierra.
An absolutely gorgeous drive if you've never done it. From Olancha north you've got the Sierra Nevadas on your left and the Panamint Range / White Mtns on your right, and once you pass Bishop you start climbing to a bit over 8000' on your way to Mono Lake.
Did some horseback riding in Leavitt Meadows on the way up to Sonora Pass (9624'), took the kids swimming in June Lake, and ate some fresh trout.
A few aspens have started to change colors but I think it'll be at least another three weeks before the rest will be in full fall foliage. It'll be time for another road trip then!
Our '06 9-3 SC performed flawlessly over 770 miles -- even up to Sonora Pass @ 9624' -- and we averaged 30.5 mpg. The worst part of the trip? Tanking up in Lee Vining at $5.19/gallon for 87 octane. Ouch!
