Each of the electric car companies seems to create an unique aura around them as if to imply they have found the magic battery. The reality is they are all in the same circumstance that physics does not change to meet the demands of the marketing department.

The cost, size and weight of batteries sufficient to give a reliable 200 mile range to a 9-3 sized vehicle operating in any climate where even modest heat or air conditioning are required will be far more expensive than the market is willing to pay. The costing of the battery alone for apx 100 kwH battery bank is $ 42,000 and has a weight of over 1,800 pounds.

Make it smaller and you simply cannot have the range. Will this ever change ? The future will see incremental improvements but only giant leap forward could produce a real practicality. Short distances in ideal climates works because the current battery technology can cope with those demands. But long range in temperate climates comes at an enormous cost.
