I just want to stretch the swimming season a little. We typically open the pool in mid-May but it is not usable for swimming for a month due to low water temperature. I would like to use solar heating, since we run the pump during the warm-up month anyway, to heat the water and have the pool up to swimming temperature by June 1st or so.
Likewise for the Fall. Last year was the first time in 25 years of pool ownership where we were able to swim the entire month of August. Typically the water cools off by mid-August but this month was even worse. The only cool spell of the entire summer struck during the first week of August and lasted 2-1/2 weeks. We never swam again after August 8th or so. I am hoping to make the pool usable thru Labor Day and continue to close it up for Winter in mid-September or so.
BTW - I always thought those giant hyperbolic cooling towers associated with Nuclear Power Plants existed strictly to promote free convective movement of ambient air which is used to cool the water loop. Does water flow upward in those towers too?
