Nickel-Metal-Hydride batteries don't have this drastic charge capacity decline as time passes by. NiMH chemistry is charge-cycle dependent (1000 full discharge and charge cycle, so the industry estimates) whereas Lithium-Ion batteries lose charge capacity just sitting there as time passes by. That's why Toyota decided again and again against switching over to Li-Ion for Prius.
