When my wife and I decided to get into care-taking/estate management we were lucky enough to land an entry level job working for a couple in Aspen. Getting that first job is nearly impossible and it was a real break. But they knew exactly what they were doing and really took advantage. The wife was a sadistic sociopath and actually bragged that no one who worked for them had ever gotten another job in the industry. The couple who was there before us only lasted three months before they quit and the couple that came after us lasted about as long. The longest anyone has lasted was a year. That couple had the same goal as we did but unfortunately quit before they had another job lined up. We also suspect they may have used her as a reference and she sandbagged them. You have to have a minimum of two solid years experience before the agencies will talk to you and that's the only way to get to the upper level jobs. We decided we were going to get that two years and she wasn't going to beat us.
Long story short, we stuck it out for two years, learned a lot, and acted like professionals no matter what. Drove the women crazy--no matter what she did she couldn't faze us. We got hooked up with an agency and landed a job with a lot more responsibility--we manage two of their four estates, better everything, full benefits and a 40% pay increase. I can still remember the day we told them. The women about went ballistic. I can remember her almost screaming "you would have never gotten that job if it weren't for this address." I said to her "you're absolutely right--thank you very much." She just deflated like a balloon. Probably one of the more satisfying moments of my life. Don't let the bastards beat you-they want you to react and fly off the handle. The best revenge is getting a better job and being a professional right up to the end.
