Thanks Eric. Yeah, when I first tested this, the alternator wasn't putting out any power. Eventually I figured out the small bulb terminal you mentioned. Worked like a charm. The lawn mower has an 18hp engine, but when you jumper that lead, you can hear the load it puts on the engine. Pretty neat.
Not sure what I'll do about the RPM thing. I would guess the pulley ratio is about 2:1, and lawn mower engines redline at about 3600rpm. And I want to run the mower at half throttle.... so... we will see what happens. I was able to run a 9 amp drill with the mower at slightly above idle, and the voltage only slightly dropped from about 14.5 to 14.4.
Probably will be ok, like you said.
